I photograph under the soft sapphire glow of a clouded sunset, to capture a
specific and recurring emotional state, a feeling of electric imminence. As it mimics
anxiety but has a sense of interoception. It is the thickening of the air before a
change; a sense that something is coming, something that is as natural as the stars
but covered in clouds. It feels like a sublime presence, that I can feel but cannot see.
The figure is treated as an extension of the environment, reflecting an internal
light that resonated with the surrounding atmosphere. I photograph the feeling of
agency of a relationship between internal experience and external space. A moment
of tension; a photograph of not one person but two presence. This work is a visual
meditation on the sublime, holding a heavy weight and stillness of The Calm Before
The Storm.
